Tips For Securing Your Bike Away From Your Residence

Protecting your bike away from your residence presents is a much greater challenge. As previously stated there are 3 levels of security, high, medium and low. A single family home is the easiest location to attain a high level of security. When you are away from your home or residence medium or low level security is about all you can expect to attain.

If you ride your bike mostly in urban areas I recommend a high quality alarm system such as the Scorpio Alarm with the 2 way FM pager. I also recommend a high quality lock. What you want to do is buy time and make a potential thief have to work long and hard to remove your bike. With a Scorpio Alarm System that is equipped with a perimeter sensor, you be alerted to the fact that someone may be attempting to steal your bike before they even touch it! Obviously the sooner you become aware of this potential threat the better your chances are of preventing a theft. If you combine the Scorpio Alarm System with a high quality lock such as the all new Roadlok it may buy your enough time to prevent even the most determined thief from stealing your bike.

Another very effective, simple and economical lock is the Grip Lock The Grip Lock is designed to lock on the throttle handgrip and the Brake lever providing highly visible and effective security. It can be easily stowed while riding. This can be especially effective when used in combination with the Scorpio Alarm System or Armed Guard Alarm System

If you use your bike to commute to work or school I recommend that you find a secure parking area and if possible locate a fixed object such as a parking meter, pole or fence. Then you can use a chain or cable to secure your bike to. If the parking area has security cameras park your bike in plain site of the camera. We have tested the Scorpio SR-i500 Alarm System to see the range of the pager. It operates very well for about one half mile. So keep that in mind when you select a location to park your bike at work. Get a co-worker or friend to trigger the alarm while you are in your office or on the job to see if you are within range. This system also has a range meter as well.

Use Disc locks, such as XENA , Oxford Boss and Kryptonite as theft deterrents. Disc locks are small enough to carry without a hassle and some like the XENA and Oxford Boss have built in alarm systems that provide additional benefits. You should use a lock reminder with any disc lock that does not have an alarm to remind you to remove it before you move your bike. The Roadlok is the only disc locking device that prevents your bike from being damaged from accidental movement. The beauty of the Roadlok is that the lock itself is permanently installed on the bike so that you only have the key and small locking pin to carry when it is not engaged. The Roadlok is only available for select models of motorcycles and will not fit every bike.

If you live in an apartment you can make a "portable" anchor. All you need is one eight foot long 2X6 piece of lumber, a 24" square of 3/8' plywood and 2 or 3 80lb bags of quick setting concrete. Cut the 2X6 into four 22" long pieces. Make a square box with the four pieces; use the plywood to cover the bottom. Mix the quick setting concrete and pour into the mould. Insert the anchor of your choice before the cement sets. After it sets remove the mould and now you have an anchor that creates formidable deterrent and makes a potential thief have to work a lot harder to steal your bike or ATV. You may want to inform management of your apartment complex that you have this "portable" anchor to make sure it will not be a problem. You may even be fortunate enough to park your bike in the same space so that you do not have to move the anchor yourself.

I also recommend a bike cover and a Versa cable to secure the cover to the motorcycle. A covered bike draws less attention than an uncovered bike, much like seeing a good looking woman in a bikini verses a woman that is clothed from head to toe.
